The World’s End is perhaps best known as being home to the Castleconnell Boat Club. But it is also popular with canoeists, kayakers, anglers and swimmers who either live locally or come for a day out from Limerick City.

It is a lovely walk from the centre of Castleconnell village, heading west down The Mall with the River Shannon winding its way alongside. The road then turns to the right but if you carry straight on past a number of historic houses, you will eventually turn left downhill and back to the riverside. At the corner you will see a Wildlife sign erected by the local Tidy Towns group, which tells the story of the area and its eel fisheries. Pause for a minute to admire the clear water cascading over and around the small islands and rocks and keep an eye out for herons, swans, kingfisher and the occasional otter.

From here, it’s a ten minute walk along the road by the river to The World’s End where there is a quay and a small car park. There is a magnificent view upstream towards O’Brien’s Bridge with the Clare hills in the distance.
